In recent years, major breakthroughs have been made in the basic research and development, production technology, process equipment, product quality and engineering application on Ultra-High Performance Concrete(UHPC). UHPC materials are on the eve of large-scale industrialization.
On the afternoon of December 8, 2019, the 2nd Grand Lecture of Chinese Concrete co-hosted by China Concrete and Cement-based Products Association (CCPA) and China Ceramic Society was grandly convened in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province.

Recommended and nominated by the experts committee, the theme of this session of the 2nd Grand Lecture of Chinese Concrete is “UHPC’s Research & Development and Engineering Application”. It was chaired by Dr. Xu Yongmo, Executive President of CCPA. Mr. Zhao Yun, Secretary General of UHPC Branch, worked as a translator and invited three scholars and experts who have made outstanding contributions in this field to conduct academic and technical exchanges.
The first guest is Mr. Patrick Mazzacane from France, who is a well-known expert with rich experience in UHPC construction technology. In this lecture, Mr Patrick Mazzacane shared his engineering practice and classic project cases for more than 30 years.

He is responsible for the construction of a series of landmark buildings for ultra-high performance concrete applications, for example, Jean Bouin Stadium, MuCEM and Montpellier High Speed Rail Station etc.

The second guest is Professor Mr Shao Xudong, Bridge Engineering Department, Hunan University. His presentation’s topic is the “Development and Application of Ultra-high Performance Bridge Structures Corresponding to Market Demands”.Based on the long-term research work on UHPC bridges, Professor Shao Xudong is committed to solving the pain points and difficulties of traditional bridges with new UHPC structures, and successfully developed the core technology of using ultra-high performance concrete to strengthen steel bridge decks for the first time in the world. It solves the worldwide problem of fatigue cracking and pavement damage of steel bridge decks.
This achievement has been applied to more than 40 bridges in 24 provinces across the country, including the Shanghai-NanTong Yangtze River Bridge, Wuhan Junshan Yangtze River Bridge, Hainan Haiwen Cross-sea Bridge, Dongting Lake Bridge and other super-large bridges, bringing huge social and economic benefits.

The last guest is Professor Mr Huang Zhengyu, Civil Engineering Department, Hunan University. His Presentation is talking about the “Research on Ultra-high Performance Cement-based Materials and it Engineering Applications”. Professor Huang Zhengyu as the main participant invented the "steel-super-tough concrete (STC) light composite bridge deck"; charged the development of micro-expansion type ultra-high-performance concrete, which has been used in the Nu River in Yunnan Liuku, the Shishou Yangtze River Bridge in Hubei and the Jiayu Yangtze River Bridge; hosted the research, development and design of the world’s first fully prefabricated and assembled ultra-high performance concrete vehicle bridge—Changsha Beichen Delta Hengsilu Cross-street Overpass. By systematically summarizing the development of cement-based materials-concrete technology and the development history of ultra-high-performance cement-based materials in the past 50 years, Professor Huang Zhengyu concluded that the future of ultra-high-performance concrete will depend on two aspects: the appropriate cost performance is the prerequisite for promotion and application; excellent quality is the guarantee for promotion and application. As long as the material properties are fully understood, the advantages are given to the difficult engineering problems, and the appropriate application fields are found, they will surely be promoted and applied quickly in our country.
