Located in Qinbei District, the Gudaoling 100MW Wind Power Parity Pilot Project (Phase II, 50MW) is preparing to harness the strong mountain winds with a planned installed capacity of 50 megawatts, releasing clean energy into the grid.

Harnessing the Wind from Mountains and Sea

As the tallest coastal mountain range in Guangxi Province, Gudaoling in Qinbei District is naturally favored by the thermal interactions of sea and land. The abundance of mountain wind resources has made the region a key element in Guangxi’s energy strategy.

With the mission of alleviating regional grid loads and replacing tens of thousands of tons of standard coal consumption, the 100MW parity pilot wind power project (Phase II, 50MW) is being constructed at the border of Bancheng and Qingtang Towns. Ten wind turbine units, each with a capacity of 5000kW, form the largest wind power installation currently under construction in Guangxi.

Contending with the Wind

To ensure the mechanical stress and power generation efficiency of the wind equipment remain within optimal parameters, the project’s primary supporting structure—the concrete tower—must be carefully designed. The tower uses prefabricated, segmented construction, with a total concrete height of 95 meters and a required compressive strength of C80. Pumping technology is employed, with each tower needing a single pour of 20–30 m3 of concrete.

As there was no precedent for C80 wind turbine tower construction in Guangxi, and the concrete involved stringent technical requirements and construction complexity, the project team ultimately selected the technically advanced and experienced team from KZJ New Materials Group Co., Ltd. to provide admixture solutions.

The Perfect “Formula” for Catching the Wind

Given the large and continuous pour volume, high surface finish standards, and the use of pumping technology in this C80 tower project, the water-reducing admixture had to be both low in sensitivity and high in adaptability. The Point-550S high-performance polycarboxylate superplasticizer, developed by KZJ New Materials Group Co., Ltd., significantly improved the workability, compactness, and early strength of the concrete, enabling smooth pumping, excellent performance, and outstanding surface quality.

The outstanding performance of the concrete was made possible through rigorous mix design testing by the KZJ technical team: high-performance viscosity-reducing mother solution and viscosity regulators were used to resolve pumpability issues caused by the high cementitious content and viscosity of C80 concrete. Composite high-efficiency defoamers ensured high surface quality of the prefabricated elements. Composite slump-retaining agents and retarders effectively reduced admixture sensitivity. Composite applied cement, premium fly ash, mineral powder, and silica fume were combined to enhance compactness and strength.

Thanks to these technical solutions, along with real-time technical oversight and quality control by the construction team, the KZJ technical team not only ensured the efficient construction of the Gudaoling 100MW parity pilot wind project (Phase II, 50MW), but also set a new benchmark for the design of specialty concrete mixes for wind turbine towers.
