To better support enterprises in China’s concrete and cement-based products industry in “going global,” the China Concrete and Cement-based Products Association (CCPA) launched The Recommended List of Key Products Equipment and Technical Services for “The Belt and Road” in 2020. Since its inception, four editions of the Catalogue have been released, with a total of 37 enterprises' products, equipment, and technologies selected. Inclusion in the Catalogue enables high-quality offerings to be promoted through CCPA’s international cooperation and exchange platforms, gaining widespread attention and favorable responses in Belt and Road countries and global markets. Some projects have already entered substantive stages of cooperation. The fourth edition of the Catalogue was officially released in June 2024. The CCPA’s official website and WeChat account will now begin showcasing selected enterprises, products, equipment, and technologies from this edition.

Issue No. 3

Product Introduction

Circular concrete poles are hollow cylindrical structures made from reinforced concrete using centrifugal forming technology. They are primarily used for overhead power distribution lines, substation supporting structures, and telecommunications line installations.

From the perspective of shape, circular concrete poles can be categorized into tapered poles and uniform-diameter poles. Tapered poles have a smaller tip and a larger base, aligning with the variation in bending moment, and are more cost-effective than uniform-diameter poles when guy wires are not used. In contrast, uniform-diameter poles, which maintain the same diameter along the entire length of the circular concrete body, are more economical than tapered poles when guy wires are applied.

In terms of reinforcement and manufacturing process, circular concrete poles can be divided into ordinary reinforced concrete poles, prestressed concrete poles, and partially prestressed concrete poles.

Ordinary reinforced concrete poles, also known as non-prestressed poles, use hot-rolled ribbed bars (rebar) as longitudinal reinforcement without the application of prestress. These poles have relatively lower crack resistance and stiffness but benefit from a simple production process, allowing for diverse pole types, and are less prone to brittle failure, making them suitable for both straight-line and strain pole applications in distribution lines.

Prestressed concrete poles, which use prestressing steel such as spiral-ribbed wires or strands as longitudinal reinforcement, are manufactured by tensioning the steel, offering better crack resistance and stiffness. However, the production process is more complex, the poles are more prone to brittle failure once the bearing capacity is exceeded, and the range of producible types is more limited due to the influence of prestress, primarily serving straight-line positions in distribution networks. Partially prestressed concrete poles combine both prestressed and non-prestressed reinforcement, with only part of the steel being tensioned during production. These poles integrate the advantages of both ordinary and prestressed poles, suitable for both straight-line and strain applications, but have the most complex production process.

Application Cases 1

Project Name: Beihai Power Supply Bureau – Beihai Industrial Park 10kV Line Project (Zφ270×18×182×G)

Description: This project is designed as a four-circuit 10kV line. Two circuits are constructed initially, with provisions reserved for the subsequent installation of the remaining two. Large-taper ordinary reinforced concrete poles (Zφ270×18×182×G) are used as straight-line poles. The upper section is reinforced with 20Φ20 ribbed steel bars, while the lower section uses 24Φ20 ribbed steel bars. The concrete strength grade is ≥C55, ensuring safe and reliable operation of the line throughout the service life of the poles.

Application Cases 2

Project Name: Yunnan Dailong Substation Project

Description: This project adopts φ300 uniform-diameter ordinary reinforced concrete poles for both equipment supports and incoming/outgoing line structures. Compared to uniform-diameter prestressed concrete poles, uniform-diameter ordinary reinforced concrete poles offer better axial compressive strength and allow for flexible adjustment of pole length. Their application in substations is both aesthetically pleasing and highly practical.

Application Cases 3

Project Name: Tieshan Port Seaside Road 10kV Line (The utility poles standing tall by the seaside and seaside concrete pole transmission lines)

Description: This is a single-circuit 10kV line that uses ordinary reinforced concrete poles (Zφ190×15×75×G) as straight-line poles. The upper section is reinforced with 14Φ18 ribbed steel bars, while the lower section uses 18Φ18 ribbed steel bars. The concrete strength grade is ≥C55, and the poles are capable of withstanding typhoon winds up to Force 15, ensuring safe and reliable operation of the line throughout the service life of the poles.

Application Cases 4

Project Name: Liupanshui Power Supply Bureau, Guizhou (190×15×M Flange-Type Concrete Poles)

Description: This line is a single-circuit 10kV distribution line. Due to its proximity to a hillside, a single-sided conductor arrangement was adopted. Partially prestressed concrete poles (Zφ190×15×M×BY) were used as straight-line poles. These poles are characterized by low deflection and excellent crack resistance, which help reduce displacement caused by eccentric loading on the pole.
