The first application of Eco-modified polyurethane concrete in pavement construction in severe cold climate of Northeast China

It is reported from Shenyang Municipal commission of Housing and Urban-rural Development that the steel Box Girder construction to modify Kuahunhe bridge across Changqingkuahun River, as the key project of Expressway in Shenyang East District Shenyang, has come to the end. The pavement construction has officially initiated. It is expected that the new bridge will be complete at the end of November.

The Changqingkuahun Bridge is located in the Southeast of Shenyang City. The original bridge has 6 bi-directional vehicle lanes with sidewalks on two sides. At the peak traffic, the original bridge could hardly fulfill the transportation requirement, leading to severe traffic jam in morning and evening. The main purpose of Changqingkuahun River bridge modification project is to build “new” bridges at the east and west sides of the original bridge. Now the new steel box girders have been constructed and the pavement construction has been initiated. In order to finish the construction as early as possible, the project headquarters made thorough research on the pavement technical plan in accordance with the low-temperature condition of Shenyang in October. In compliance of quality requirements, the team determined to apply ECO-modified polyurethane concrete technology for the first time in Northeast china. The innovative pavement technology could elongate the construction duration of pavement construction even under low-temperature condition.


Representative from construction team told reporters that the traditional pavement construction required construction temperature to be over 5oC, while ECO-modified polyurethane concrete pavement can extend the construction temperature to be over 0oC. The single-layered pavement structure can be cast-on-site by one time using special equipment and is ready for transportation in two hours. The construction process is highly efficient with no further curing required. The raw materials can be mixed and cast on site without any need to heat so that the supply and quality of raw materials could be guaranteed. The pavement has high pull-out strength and good stability at high and low temperatures with rutting stability. The material has low water and chloride permeability so that the corrosion of steel slabs induced by deicers in winter is minimized. The introduced new technology will become play a leading role for the construction of steel box girders at low temperature in northeast China. The project will provide efficient technology support for the completion of bridge in 2018.


In November 2018, after the “new” bridge is completed, the original bridge will be reinforced and the construction will last for a year. After its completion in next October, Changqing bridge will be transformed from 6 lanes to 10 lanes and become the widest bridge on Hunhe River in Shenyang City.
