Since May, the upper structure of Yangsigang Yangtze River Bridge at Wuhan has initiated its catwalk floor construction phase. Dozens of workers from China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group ( MBEC) are installing a temporary “drawbridge” high in the midair. At 11 o’clock on May 14th, the journalist is standing in the construction site at the height of 228.8 meters, feeling the gust of wind probably of 6th grade. Group leader, Mr. Chengyi Lei, together with about a dozen workers, was fixing the manrope along the catwalk floor with a wrench and stringing the safety nets. The construction site is busy and well-ordered.
The catwalk is a temporary working face installed under the main suspension during the construction of suspension bridge. Parallel to the main suspension system, the catwalk is the scaffold platform where workers could stand and make the construction operation at midair. As a temporary construction facility, the catwalk will be dismantled after the bridge is completed. The Yangsigang Yangtze River Bridge is about 4.1 km long, the longest double layer suspension bridge in the world. It is expected to be finished at 2019. After that, the traffic jam of Wuhan Urban Expressway will be greatly relieved.
